The Magnolia flower design will be printed onto fabric for you. (A sample of using thread painting project will be on display around mid-February at K&K Logo 143 1st Ave., Dyersville, Iowa for you to see close-up.)

Class will include instructions in free motion quilting using your sewing machine. After practicing free motion stitching, you will advance to thread painting techniques. Think of your photo on fabric as your canvas, your thread as your embellishments, and your sewing machine as your work horse.

No one needs any special skills needed to do thread painting on fabric. Recommendations: Prior to class, at home practice free motion stitching with your sewing machine. Doodling on paper helps to retrain your brain/eye coordination to help you move your fabric under your needle smoother. Audition thread colors on the photo of the magnolia.

                                         Magnolia
Bring to class:
 Minimum of 3-4 different thread colors from your audition (dark shades to lighter shades in the pink to purple colors including maybe soft white and regular white.) You will be blending the colors together. Variegated threads do not work.
Audition your thread stash first. If you need to you can purchase #40 wt. thread (polyester/rayon or cotton). Using Polyester or Rayon threads will give a shine to your design.

  • Embroidery foot (open foot works best), if no embroidery foot…you will need to place your fabric in an embroidery hoop.

  • Wide zig-zag throat plate.
  • 2-3 bobbins (empty preferred)

  • Sandwich plain light-colored fabric, batting, and back fabric (8x10 inch size). Baste at home all four edges of sandwich.
  • Cushion for your chair, extra sewing light, water (optional)
  • Bring your enthusiasm and imagination to allow the magic of playing with threads happen.

BIO - Sharon Davison, owner of “Dancing with Threads … Art of Quilting, Maquoketa, Iowa. Embellishing art quilts with thread has been my joy since 2012. I am a member of Mississippi Valley Quilt Guild, Davenport, Iowa and Cable Car Quilt Guild, Dubuque, Iowa. My interest in playing with thread started in my high school years with my doodling on paper. Retirement gave me more time to do the artwork in which I love to create. I attended Jennifer Day’s Professional Thread Painting Training Seminar, Santa Fe, NM. Since that time, I have earned Best in Category Awards with my entries. My special embellished quilts have been on display at Maquoketa Art Performance Center along with the Maquoketa Art Experience, both of Maquoketa.

Mid-March of 2023, my “Heritage Blossoms” (shown on the left) will be on display at Figge Quilt Exhibit, Davenport, Iowa as an awarding winning quilt at the Great River Quilt Show.

I teach “thread painting” classes, lectures with a “trunk show” showing my work, along with doing commission requests from customers. Another way I embellish fabric is with fabric paint, finishing quilt piece with free motion machine stitching.
I live on a farm in Maquoketa with her husband, Don. After attending Nursing School followed by graduating from Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa with my BA, I am now a retiree after enjoying 29 years in my nursing career.
